Abstract

The object of this laboratory thesis is the identification of a housing solution to be used in case of emergency, in particular in the second phase of the path of reconstruction following a destructive event, namely that of a medium-term temporary residences, immediately subsequent the very first emergency phase where, because of the demands of immediacy, the solution of the tent city presents itself as the most functional. In the face of negative past experiences it is particularly felt the need to preserve the social fabric of the community through timely and targeted intervention. An analysis of the methods of management of the emergency and reconstruction following traumatic or disruptive events that have occurred in recent years, shows the lack of a master plan on what to do. This has meant that the various initiatives have had mixed fortunes, particularly where local communities have not been involved have obtained the most controversial results, such as the cases of the Irpinia earthquake or Eagle. From a broad research efforts will focus on the Italian case, making sure that the design will meet its cultural and contextual. The solution we are going to find will have to respond to features such as the optimization of the production process, in order to minimize time and cost for the reconstruction; adaptability to different intervention scenarios that may exist and sustainability, understood as convertibility and reuse of building elements, choice of environmentally friendly materials and high-performance construction technologies.

EMERGENCY HOUSING: DESIGN OF MODULAR PREFABRICATED TEMPORARY HOUSES.
