Abstract

The idea of the construction of a lighthouses route is a strategy for the Mediterranean coastal heritage exploitation highlighting the landscapes strong identity and complex view in which the lighthouse is inserted. The Italian Lighthouses Route has as principle the construction of a connection between geographically conspicuous points of the coast where the lighthouses and the other architectural elements, such as watchtowers, measure the coastal landscape. These elements have the task to link the coastline to more extended inward parts of territory. This strategy enables to build a sustainable development to make the coasts as protagonists of this route in a new key, different from a typical seaside tourism by involving horizons and cultural identity landscapes of the different places. The experimented model of the route establishes spatial, settlement and landscape relations both with the internal territories and along the coastline, following historical routes and existing tracks, where the lighthouse is the fulcrum and the ordering element. In the research carried out in San Vito Lo Capo, the elements of coastal defense are set up, such as watchtowers, production facilities, such as the tuna, and the naturalistic and landscape contexts of the area such as the Zingaro Oriented Nature Reserves and the Cofano. The adopted model consists of a linear coastal path divided into stages by the present historical and architectural heritage, integrating landings and strategic nodes which link the coast to the internal territory through crossings, hiking trails and on the ridges of the heights.

THE TYRRHENIAN LIGHTHOUSES - STRATEGIC VISIONS AND PROJECT GUIDELINES FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SICILY LIGHTHOUSES ROUTE
