The term typography historically refers to a system of direct printing on paper, carried out with a relief matrix, manually composed with movable characters, otherwise carried out by means of a mechanical composition process (linotype or monotype). Embroidery, on the other hand, is defined as the manual or mechanical needlework on a fabric of decorative stitches following a certain design, or the sometimes excessive dedication to refining the form of writing. And again, when we talk about material typography, we describe a typography that involves the engagement of matter, thus giving an active and autonomous role to corporeality and thus contributing to change its traditional conception. It is worth mentioning the diffusion of sampler embroidery, which corresponds to small linen cloths embroidered with a needle and thread with alphabets, monograms, greetings and dedications, in 17th-century England, a period known as the Golden Age. The sampler is a phenomenon of material typography that links the concept of typography to that of embroidery. The project aims to experiment with this link by declining it in this precise typographic form and finally to develop a stratifiable typeface, suitable for embroidery machines (layer font). So, in the first part of the thesis we deal with the study of the historical context and more specifically with the case study of samplers: these have an important cultural value since, handed down from generation to generation, they allowed young women to learn the alphabet and numbering and consequently become familiar with reading and writing. Then there is an examination of the development of embroidery techniques and technologies, with a focus on today's industrial and amateur embroidery machines, how they work and the files they can read (.pes). This is followed by an introduction to typographic variables with scanning, digitisation and analysis of the letters of the implements according to the typographic variables, while the last part focuses, through the investigation of the criteria dictated by the machines, on the creation of a family of overlapping typographic characters according to needs.

Abstract
This is followed by an introduction to typographic variables with scanning, digitisation and analysis of the letters of the implements according to the typographic variables, while the last part focuses, through the investigation of the criteria dictated by the machines, on the creation of a family of overlapping typographic characters according to needs.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
