In this context, it was necessary to carry out an experimental test phase of the most important low speed (SPI, RS485 / 422 and CAN) and high speed (fast ethernet and gigabit ethernet) communication buses present on board the vital module, exploiting, from the software point of view , the various controllers that can be instantiated in the PS and PL sections of the MPSoC in the Vivado environment and usable through dedicated firmware in the Vitis environment. From the hardware point of view, a specific hardware setup was used for the low speed interfaces which, where necessary, required the connection of an external peripheral or an oscilloscope with the function of decoding serial protocols. For the high speed interfaces (ethernet), a dedicated PCB acting as a backplane was used which, by connecting to SMO, allows the use of two RJ45 connectors to which it is possible to connect via UTP cat.5 cable. The experimental results confirmed the correct transmission and reception of frames and randomized packets for low speed peripherals (SPI, CAN, RS4xx with UART protocol) showing full equality between the number of packets sent and the number of packets correctly received and decoded. The result was repeatable at the different working frequencies envisaged by the reference regulatory subsets. As for the high-speed peripherals, the four Fast Ethernet (10 / 100M) available on the board have shown that they can exchange up to 3.3Gb of data in 290 s with an average speed of 94.8Mb / s both configured as a server and as a client. The Gigabit Ethernet controller has also shown that it can successfully manage the data exchange between an external single board computer and the SMO application logic instantiated on the RFIOS proprietary real-time operating system.

Abstract

The European Union (EU), in the context of the Shift2Rail project in the railway sector, has provided a huge push towards the development of automatic railway traffic management systems that would allow for the optimization of consumption, better interoperability between the various national systems and an increase in transport capacity. In this context, the Automatic Train Operation module, briefly ATO, was introduced, which, alongside and integrating with the already existing and widespread ERTMS / ETCS architecture, forms the well-known ATO over ETCS structure. CHARACTERIZATION AND VALIDATION OF A MPSOC XILINX BASED BOARD FOR VITAL CONTROL IN AUTONOMOUS TRAIN OPERATION
