The present thesis is the result of a collaboration between the Politecnico di Bari and the integrated urban solid waste treatment plant located in Manduria, managed by the company Manduriambiente S.p.A. The objective was to define the performance level of the platform, looking at both the mechanical biological treatment line and the service/supply landfill, attached to the plant itself. The structure of the text has provided two separate but at the same time consequential blocks, identified as "PART A" (chapters 1-2) and "PART B" (chapters 3-4-5-6-7). The first chapter is a sort of excursus on the regulatory framework on waste management, divided into three levels (European, national and regional): it intends to discuss, with a critical eye, both potentials and deficits of the current legislative dictates concerning the destiny of the fractions obtained from mechanical biological treatment (biostabilised organic fraction and combustible dry fraction, FSC). The second chapter describes the chain of processes that make up a mechanical biological treatment line, specifying the individual phases and the different plant layouts, identifying the MSW landfill as the final link in this chain. The third chapter opens PART B and illustrates in detail both the objectives and the experimental plan, pursued and implemented in this work. The fourth chapter is a description of the system studied, in order to provide a technical-management framework for the three-year period in which the platform was analysed. The fifth chapter reports the detailed analysis carried out on the TMB line from 2018 to 2020: it collects and processes all the available company data in order to characterise the waste flows entering and leaving the line. On the basis of the results obtained, mass balances were obtained, which are of fundamental importance for assessing the performance level of the mechanical-biological treatment under study, since they link inputs to outputs and define the "state of form" of the plant. The sixth chapter closes the discussion and deals with landfill using the same methodological approach, characterising both incoming and outgoing waste in terms of quality and quantity.
