The boat under examination has two foils; the rudder one is operated by the helmsman through an adjustment mechanism controlled by the stick (extension of the rudder bar), the bow one, located at the end of the drift, is equipped with a self-adjustment mechanism according to the height of the hull on the free surface of the water, which allows the foiling condition.

Abstract

Modern sailboats that take part in regattas such as the America’s Cup take off on the water, using the same physical principles that allow airplanes to fly. In the latest XXXVI edition of the 2021 America’s Cup, Luna Rossa of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, winner of the 2021 Prada Cup, took part. The Italian boat is a monohull of the class Ac75 that manages to "fly" on the water thanks to the foil, asymmetric arms that exploit hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces, allowing it to reach even 50 knots of speed. The purpose of this thesis is to define a method of analysis of the forces acting on a foil system with adjustable flap. DEVELOPMENT OF FLAP CONTROL DEVICE FOR A SAILBOAT FOIL
