Ultra-High Performance Concrete is an advanced cement-based composite material which exhibits a very high compressive strength, and non-brittleness behaviour. Its development is the result of numerous studies, undertaken since the 1970s from the Danish H. Bache, aimed at filling the shortcomings presented by reinforced concrete. The addition of steel fibres in 1980s has made UHPC much closer to the performance of steel than to those of concrete, allowing to achieve lightweight, extremely resistant, and long-lasting structures. After several decades of development, a wide range of commercial UHPC formulations have been developed worldwide to cover an increasing number of applications and the rising demand of quality construction materials, examples are Ductal® developed in France by Lafarge, Dura® in Malaysia and Cor-Tuf® in America. The introduction of UHPC has had a huge impact in the infrastructure sector, its excellent properties have made it possible to build a large number of bridges almost all over the world, from pedestrian ones to road and rail bridges, whose applications are very recent and restricted to short stretches of the railway line. The present thesis work is devoted to investigating which advantages the use of UHPC may bring both in the design and construction phase of a bridge structure, showing, trough real projects and case studies, how it is possible to optimize the geometry of the deck cross section and how, the traditional erection methods adapted to UHPC precast segmental bridges allows to ease the transport, speed up the erection and assembling of new infrastructures and minimizing traffic disruptions, with significant savings in terms of raw materials and economic resources.
