The thesis work had as its objective the testing, programming and calibration of a test bench of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) created in collaboration between the research and development group of AROL SPA Bari and the research group of the laboratory of Electrical Machines and Drives of the Polytechnic of Bari. This test bench was designed and built for the study of innovative PMSM control and parametric identification techniques. The first testing phase involved checking the correct functioning of all the bench devices, including the electric motors, the electronic power converters, the control units and the various sensors and transducers. The testing phase also envisaged the integration of the various components in order to obtain two distinct and mechanically coupled electric drives. This phase was preceded by a detailed study of all the technical documentation of the bench devices and involved the use of various laboratory equipment including handheld digital multimeters, digital oscilloscopes and voltage and current probes to test correct communication and the correct functioning of the components. Furthermore, this phase included programming activities for the control unit management software. In particular, these activities had both the aim of enabling the correct reception of the signals coming from the sensors and transducers and the correct generation of the driving signals of the electronic power converters in order to carry out the PWM modulation. The second phase involved the development and implementation of a complete PMSM control algorithm to carry out the well-known field-oriented regulation which guarantees high efficiency and dynamic performance. Subsequently, calibration activities were carried out on the speed and current regulators of the motors to guarantee the stability, speed and precision of the regulation. Finally, several tests were carried out for the experimental identification of the characteristic parameters of the PMSM dynamic model. These tests required both the use of dedicated equipment, including power waveform generators, precision electrical resistance meters and oscilloscopes equipped with voltage-current probes, and the execution of dedicated control actions. The results of the experimental identification will constitute the reference values necessary for the validation of innovative automatic and non-invasive parametric identification algorithms. The work carried out therefore achieved the objective of making the test bench fully operational and ready for research and experimental validation activities relating to the control and parametric identification of PMSMs.
