Plasmon trapping devices are devices that exploit plasmonic effects to trap and manipulate nanoscale objects; they have had a major impact on scientific and engineering research; they also offer potential applications in various fields, such as optics, electronics and photovoltaics. More recently, the possibility of performing manipulations with surface plasmons has opened up opportunities not achievable with conventional far-field optical methods. The use of surface plasmon techniques allows for the excitation of hot spots much smaller than the wavelength of free space; with this confinement, the plasmonic field facilitates the trapping of various nanostructures and materials with greater precision. The successful manipulation of small particles has fostered a number of expanding applications. In this paper, we review the principles and developments in plasmon tweezer techniques, including both nanostructure-assisted platforms and structure-free systems. Construction methods and evaluation criteria of the techniques are presented, with the aim of providing an overview on the subject. The most common new applications of plasmon tweezers, namely sorting and transport, sensing and imaging, and especially those in a biological context, are critically discussed. Finally, we consider the future development and potential new applications of this technique and discuss the prospects for its impact on science.

Abstract
Finally, we consider the future development and potential new applications of this technique and discuss the prospects for its impact on science.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
