The central nervous system is characterized by the presence of a cell population, the microglia, which can be defined as the "guardian of the brain" constituting the first line of defense against any pathogens. These cells also play a supporting role in the brain and contribute to its development. Thanks to research, it is known that the presence of injuries or infections can cause a functional change in the microglial cells which, when activated, initiate an inflammatory response aimed at restoring the balance of the damaged area. This is the concept behind the mechanism of neuroinflammation. An accumulation and persistence of inflammatory states beyond the normal physiological duration, determines the establishment of a neurodegenerative condition. Among the neurodegenerative diseases associated with microglia are Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Neurodegenerative diseases cause damage to neurons and a progressive loss of the latter. For these reasons, the study and knowledge of the reaction of microglia to pathological conditions is considered of fundamental importance, as a starting point for the development of strategies for containment and resolution of the damage.
