In recent years, the design of structures has proved remarkable developments: this evolution is to be attributed to the great interest by a part of the scientific community about the problems related to the protection of buildings localized in seismic areas. The new non-linear analysis techniques that also consider large displacements, dissipative effects, structural degradation caused to load-unload cycles, and fiber modeling have been stimulated by the need to consider effects that weren’t considered in the calculations of few decades ago, but which today they’re indispensable to secure good structural design based on performance criteria. Therefore, modern anti-seismic design methods are based on satisfying different levels of performance, for which the structure mustn’t exceed pre-established damage levels. To realize this type of design means using a non-linear approach: this implies a growing operational difficulty for the designers, especially in the case of dynamic analyses, which require more extensive theoretical knowledge and computational efforts than to linear analyses. Classical elastic-linear analyses, in fact, are simpler to use and understand, but they’re not able to predict the potential inelastic deformation capacity of a structure and, for this reason, they’re unsuitable for a modern anti-seismic design based on the performance concept or to investigate non-linear behavior and collapse conditions. Accordingly, the focus of the problem is the search for a general calculation method that can reproduce the effects induced by the earthquake and that can effectively predict the displacement capacity, the elastic and inelastic behavior, the position and the evolution of the plastic hinges, the location of structural weaknesses, the mechanisms of crisis or collapse, the ductility capacity of a structure and, at the same time, can be conceptually and computationally simple. The first chapter of this project illustrates the state of the art about the anti-seismic design of new regular and irregular RC structures, in compliance with the current Italian buildings code («NTC 2018»). The second chapter focuses, however, on Non-Linear Static Analysis (Pushover), on its theoretical aspects and on how it is set up in current standards. The third chapter illustrates the FEM software used and the aspects characterizing this study. The fourth chapter, instead, describes nine archetypes with their materials, geometries, the applied loads, and the calculation models used. The fifth chapter describes the application of Pushover Analysis (through different load profiles) and Time Histories Non-Linear Dynamic Analysis to the above structures. The sixth chapter, therefore, consists in the comparison and review of the results obtained from the non-linear analyses. Finally, the seventh chapter has the task of exposing the deductions reached and future developments about this compound, also based on the results achieved by this thesis.

Abstract

COMPARISON AMONG STATIC AND DYNAMIC NONLINEAR ANALYSIS FOR IRREGULAR BUILDINGS DESIGNED ACCORDING TO THE NEW ITALIAN BUILDING CODE
