This thesis work essentially consists of two parts. After a brief introduction on how solid urban waste originates, the so-called "Part A" is developed through a description of the management systems of residual urban waste, both in a national and regional context. After that, the legislation governing these management systems at European, national and regional level was examined and deepened. Finally, this first part closes with a detailed description of the mechanical-biological treatment to which mixed waste is subjected. In part B of this work, on the other hand, was examinated the performance of the MBT plant of the company "Progetto Ambiente Bacino Lecce Due S.u.r.l.", located in Località Pastorizze in the Municipality of Poggiardo (Le). The analysis, conducted in the period January 2018 - December 2022, focused on the following aspects: composition of incoming waste and outgoing RBD flow; mass balance; monitoring of the potential Dynamic Respirometric Index (IRDp) for the RBD. At the end of this work, based on the results obtained, it was possible to state that the plant is a best practice in the regional context as regards the management of mixed waste.
