This thesis explores the field of biometric authentication, offering a comprehensive understanding of its underlying concepts, applications and technologies. We begin by establishing the context of biometric authentication and outlining the objectives of the research. Next, the thesis delves into the fundamental concepts of biometrics, discussing its definition, biometric traits and common processes, as well as the history of biometric authentication. A detailed overview of various types of biometric authentication is then presented, including fingerprints, facial recognition, iris scanning, hand vein scanning, and other emerging biometric approaches. Hardware and software implementation methods and the mathematical principles underlying these technologies are also discussed. We focus on the performance and reliability of biometric systems, presenting metrics for performance evaluation, accuracy and security analysis, and case studies. Additionally, important privacy and usability considerations are addressed, as well as how data is stored. Subsequently, the thesis examines several libraries for developing biometric algorithms, including OpenCV, TensorFlow, Dlib, Keras, Matlab and Bob, providing examples of biometric algorithm implementation. Chapter 6 is dedicated to the presentation and analysis of the results, discussing data collection methods, specific metrics and evaluation criteria, and presenting example code of the libraries used. The data is presented in both tabular and graphical formats, with a focus on fingerprint recognition, facial recognition and iris recognition. Finally, the thesis concludes with a summary of the topics covered and the conclusions drawn from the research. Overall, the thesis offers an in-depth and comprehensive analysis of biometric authentication, presenting both a theoretical overview and practical applications of the field.
