The purpose of this thesis is to provide organizations with a governance framework that can be utilized for business process automation within the context of complex and interconnected process ecosystems. To achieve this, the study begins its exploration with an analysis of the evolution of processes automated by various technologies, including Business Process Management (BPM), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), low-code/no-code platforms, Generative AI and agentic systems. Through literature research, the success or failure of organizations to create automation benefits is documented. Subsequently, it has been evaluated how organizations are implementing Intelligent Process Transformation (IPT) through a case study approach across industries, including financial services banking, insurance, and energy. Then, the methodology is engaged in qualitative and quantitative research, whereby, firstly, a combined analysis of literature and case study results is conducted to identify common issues facing the governance of organizations’ automation initiatives. Then, the thesis proposes a structured governance framework that translates these gaps into actionable dimensions. Each dimension is associated with measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and maturity levels, enabling organizations to assess and monitor their automation initiatives in a more objective and data-driven way. In addition it is developed a comparison with the existing governance models with respect to how it could be used to improve the future of project management; with emphasis placed on how this will relate specifically to artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The main contribution of this research lies in the identification of managerial gaps in intelligent automation and in the development of a governance framework designed to address these challenges in a structured and systematic way.

Abstract
The main contribution of this research lies in the identification of managerial gaps in intelligent automation and in the development of a governance framework designed to address these challenges in a structured and systematic way.I documenti in UNITESI sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
