The paper is aimed at studying the Urban Heat Island phenomenon (UHI) in a Mediterranean city, an area of Bari city in Puglia region (Southern Italy). More specifically, it explores the impact that urban mitigation techniques as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) may have in reducing temperature, saving energy, as well as their potential to the provision of ecosystem services, for climate change adaptation and co-benefits in urban areas. In particular, a small-scale study about microclimatic benefits and impacts of solutions has been provided and a case of architectural solutions as an integrative NBS strategy to adapt to climate change has been developed. Through the use of ENVI-Met software, a climate model was created and calibrated using real-time temperature, humidity, wind speedy data etc., provided by ARPA (Agency for Prevention and Protection of the Environment) Puglia that performs meteorological monitoring activities based on Meteorological Monitoring Systems. Based on this first analysis, a real model about the current energy situation of the investigated area was obtained. Thereafter, new climate files have been created by modifying the scenario from time to time. Through the use of ENVI-Met software, the effect of the mitigation technologies of the urban heat island on the environment was verified with the variation of the input parameters. In particular, seven different scenarios were simulated: - "Cool Pavements Scenario" and "Green Pavements Scenario" obtained by replacing all the pavements of the original model respectively with "Cool pavements" and "Green pavements"; - "Deciduous trees Scenario" and "Conifer trees Scenario" obtained by adding new trees to the original scenario, where possible; - Three scenarios with three different types of "green facades". For each of these scenarios, air temperature and surface temperature were analyzed to assess the effectiveness of such nature-based solutions to promote climate resilience and reduce the Urban Heat Island effect, providing evidence of the assumed benefits resulting from applying NBS.
