Respiratory monitoring is essential for the assessment of the clinical conditions of an individual. Typically, respiratory signals are acquired through dedicated devices, such as chest straps or spirometers, which can be inconvenient and limiting. This thesis explores the extraction of the respiratory signal from the photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal, a signal widely used to monitor heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2). The extraction of the respiratory signal from the PPG offers several advantages, including reduced invasiveness, the possibility of continuous monitoring and the use of already widespread devices, such as pulse oximeters. The study also includes the development of an optimal algorithm for the extraction of the respiratory signal and the detection of respiratory peaks from the PPG signal.
