The following degree thesis directs its theoretical and design research into the fascinating and at the same time tiring field of copying which is a fundamental aspect of industrial design. The research starts from an etymological, conceptual and historical reflection on the meaning of copy, with the objective of applying it in the processes of the ceramic material. An interesting challenge since a technique such as ceramics which has an artistic matrix, based on the uniqueness of the piece, incorporates the process of the plaster mold allowing it to be reproduced in series. Mass production that is still of an artisanal nature, but it is the same that is used, evolving and enhancing it, in the manufacture of industrial ceramic products; tiles are the most typical case. The artisan matrix of the copy has a double aspect: the first is given by the mold that allows us to clone, to reproduce the object in series, the second aspect concerns precisely the formal process which is given by a refinement of the same over the millennia: in the moment in which man has achieved a formal result through progressive refinements, he is tempted to repeat it. It is a process that we can also verify during history: there are identical Greek vases that seem to be made with the mould. Once the Greek craftsman understands the process of making a perfect vase, he repeats it almost obsessively, creating identical copies of it. Those vases are the result of an achievement of a formal optimum. The investigation leads to the final project which serves to demonstrate the theoretical assumption of the thesis. The project, which becomes prototyping, is based on a modular table set made with the mold technique. Given the short period of the thesis, in the face of a technology that requires time for the drying, firing, cooling and glazing phases of the material, we have limited the scope of the investigation to this state of affairs, despite having clear the expansion potential of this project. My family tradition in the sector will allow me to continue, explore, experiment and complete the design research on the production process of the mold and copy.
