Dental implantology with osseointegration is a key sector in mechanical engineering applied to medicine, significantly impacting the quality of life for patients affected by edentulism. The success of modern dental implants is based on osseointegration, which is the process by which an implant integrates stably with the surrounding bone, forming a single biomechanical structure. This thesis, within the Scientific Disciplinary Sector ING – IND/14 (Mechanical Design and Machine Construction), explores in depth various aspects related to the design and material analysis of implant systems, aiming to improve biomechanical performance and long – term durability. Initially, a detailed analysis of the stratified anatomical and histological structure of natural teeth is presented; the first chapter concludes with a discussion of the biomechanical characteristics and dynamics of mastication, whose understanding is essential for developing artificial implants that replicate the performance of natural teeth. The second chapter introduces the field of osseointegrated dental implantology, starting from a historical perspective and then describing the current state of the art; it addresses concepts such as bone resorption, bone density, and implant stability, concluding with an overview of the limitations of this practice. A focused section provides a detailed description of implant systems, starting with an analysis of the main geometric features of implants and connections, followed by a discussion of materials and surface treatments designed to enhance osseointegration. The fourth chapter deals with the phenomenon of fatigue, which significantly affects the long – term lifespan of an implant: the mechanisms of fatigue damage and the main influencing factors are presented, along with Wöhler's mathematical model; it concludes by illustrating how a fatigue test for dental implants is conducted according to the ISO 14801 standard. An essential part of the work is the application of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a modeling and numerical simulation technique currently used in almost all fields of engineering: simulations allow the analysis of the mechanical behaviour of dental implants under different operational conditions, identifying potential optimization points to increase resistance and durability while simultaneously reducing the risk of mechanical failure.
