The purpose of this thesis is the design and optimization of a lens based on metamaterials (metalens) in order to improve the focusing and thermal efficiency of a microwave applicator used for thermal ablation. Therefore, in this work the optimization of a needle applicator for the hyperthermic treatment of tumours, operating in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band, at the frequency of f=2,45 GHz, has been carried out. Two metalenses have been designed by using the CST STUDIO SUITE© software, considering the needle applicator inserted in a cube of liver tissue. Electromagnetic and thermal analyses have been performed in order to estimate the performance of the designed metalenses. The simulations results obtained prove the concrete possibility of enhancing the effects of thermal ablative therapy by using the needle applicator with the designed metalenses.
