Abstract

The lateral stability of railway track is a key factor for ensuring the safety and reliability of modern rail infrastructures, especially in a context of increasing operating speeds and intensified traffic. This thesis critically examines the mechanisms governing the track’s lateral resistance, considering the interaction among rails, sleepers, fastening systems, and ballast. After reviewing the theoretical foundations, the study explores both the most recent experimental measurement methods—such as the Single Tie Push Test (STPT) and the Single Sleeper Push Test (SSPT)—and continuous monitoring techniques based on sensors and machine learning. Particular attention is devoted to the effects of ballast degradation and maintenance operations, which can significantly affect stability, as well as to innovative solutions (such as Under Sleeper Pads and Lateral Restraint Plates) capable of enhancing lateral resistance. Through the analysis of practical case studies, the work provides an updated and comprehensive synthesis, serving as a reference for engineers, designers, and researchers involved in the design and maintenance of railway infrastructure, with the aim of promoting operational strategies that ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the rail system.
