This thesis presents an experimental investigation of the interaction between a hydraulic turbine and the flow in an open-channel environment, with the aim of characterizing the wake structure and the flow modifications induced in the velocity field. The introductory section reviews the theoretical foundations of free-surface flows, flow regimes, and turbulence, providing the conceptual framework necessary to correctly interpret the behavior of the flow in the vicinity of an obstacle. The experimental campaign was carried out at the Hydraulic Constructions Laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Bari, using a modular fixed-bed channel in which a turbine was installed as an obstacle to the flow. To achieve a three-dimensional characterization of the velocity field, advanced measurement techniques based on Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) were employed. This technology exploits the Doppler effect to retrieve the instantaneous components of velocity. Measurements were acquired using a Nortek Vectrino and processed with the Vectrino and Explore V software packages, performing surveys upstream and downstream of the turbine under different flow-depth conditions. The results show that the upstream flow is regular, uniform, and free from significant disturbances, whereas downstream the presence of the turbine generates pronounced lateral and vertical motions, an increase in turbulence associated with the shear layer and wake vortices, and elevated Reynolds stresses. The analysis of the velocity profiles highlights the complexity of the flow field immediately downstream of the obstacle, in agreement with findings reported in the literature, and confirms the strongly three-dimensional nature of the wake generated by the turbine.

Abstract

HYDRODYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF TURBULENT FLOW FIELDS AROUND A SOLID OBSTACLE IN FREE‑SURFACE CHANNELS
