This thesis analyzes the handling and feeding process of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste at Tersan Puglia S.p.A., with the aim of identifying technological solutions capable of improving the regularity, control and efficiency of the bag opener feeding phase. Starting from the analysis of the as-is scenario, based on a manually operated material handler, two improvement solutions were proposed and compared: a visual support system using cameras and a tablet, referred to as I 2.0, and an automated overhead crane integrated with the PLC logic of the line, referred to as I 4.0. The three configurations were evaluated through economic, operational, environmental and socio-organizational KPIs. The results show that the I 2.0 solution represents the best short-term compromise, while the I 4.0 solution can be considered a more structural development option, economically sustainable only if the additional production capacity is effectively exploited and valued.
