SemCom (Semantic Communication) represents an emerging paradigm in the world of telecommunications, whose objective is no longer the faithful transmission of data at a syntactic level, but the effective transmission of the meaning (i.e., the semantics) of such data. Thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence models, SemCom offers the possibility of transmitting compact semantic representations of data, reducing the load on the network. However, this new paradigm introduces new problems from the point of view of security and privacy, which cannot be addressed using the protection mechanisms of traditional telecommunications paradigms. This thesis analyzes the main challenges related to the protection of the privacy of users of SemCom systems. In particular, the analysis focuses on three fundamental problems: semantic leakage; the vulnerability of semantic models to adversarial attacks; and the problem of model integrity. For each of these problems, the thesis presents and discusses security and privacy solutions based on advanced techniques, including differential privacy, mechanisms for robustness against adversarial attacks, and the use of blockchain and smart contracts to guarantee the integrity and verifiability of models. Finally, the importance of the encryption of data transmitted in SemCom systems is analyzed, with particular attention to semantic-aware encryption that combines homomorphic encryption and symmetric key encryption, in order to protect sensitive information. For each proposed topic, the thesis briefly analyzes the problem, and then focuses on a real example, which represents a solution to that problem.
