Recommender systems play a fundamental role in today’s society, where the average user is constantly faced with a sea of options to navigate. Now more than ever, given the explosion of the web and the proliferation of countless services, it is essential to ensure that users can enjoy a seamless and accessible experience. Recommender systems enable this simplification of interaction through the application of various methodologies. On the other hand, due to the relatively young age of this field, studying such systems and assessing them in terms of reproducibility and performance are far from straightforward tasks. In this thesis, we discuss the state of the art regarding a specific type of recommender systems: session-based recommendation systems (SBRSs). In particular, we examine issues related to reproducibility and offline performance evaluation. Subsequently, we conduct a cross-analysis of implementation techniques by comparing 47 studies. These carefully selected works represent the current state of the art in the SBRS domain. Finally, we draw a number of insights and discuss potential future directions. The main contribution of this thesis lies in clarifying the complex current landscape, with the aim of shedding light on methodologies and their associated challenges.
