Today, secondary railways are increasingly being rediscovered, because a new use for neglected infrastructures halts their decay processes and restores continuity in the anthropic-natural system. Nevertheless what to do to reuse abandoned railways - or to re-evaluate those with little traffic - is a complex decision problem. The main objective of this study is to develop a methodology able to support decision makers in the field of local public transport, offering a mathematical model of planning aid that returns the level of utility perceived by the user for both LPT and 3 tourist scenarios (tourist enhancement, greenway and velorail). For this purpose, a Neuro-Fuzzy model, ANFIS, is implemented after discussing the general state of the research and presenting the most eminent studies in the literature. To calibrate and test the model, we rely on the data collected through a questionnaire specially designed for the catchment area of the Barletta-Spinazzola railway (Italy, Apulia), chosen for the application. ANFIS has proven to be more effective, in terms of RMSE, than the 19 main statistical regressions, although the difficulty of rendering the perception and the very personal way of reasoning of the user remains evident. The cross-interpretation of the results has made it possible to relate several non-emerging aspects at first glance and to investigate the existence of some cause-effect links even in apparently distant sectors. The sensitivity analysis shows a decided incidence of comfort and accessibility among the main input parameters. Future developments in the wake of this study may focus on a more effective elimination of outliers and a more refined calibration of the ANFIS structure.

Abstract
Future developments in the wake of this study may focus on a more effective elimination of outliers and a more refined calibration of the ANFIS structure.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
