This thesis aims to analyze the behavior of an extrusion system for 3D printing using polylactic acid (PLA) in pellet form. The experimental study was initially conducted through free-air extrusions — i.e., without deposition onto the build plate — and subsequently extended to include on-plate extrusion, in order to evaluate system performance as a function of various process parameters, with particular attention to the interaction between extrusion temperature, layer height, and extrusion speed. Experimental tests were carried out at three different extrusion temperatures (190 °C, 200 °C, and 210 °C), three layer heights (0.375 mm, 0.75 mm, and 1.125 mm), and two screw rotation speeds (15 rpm and 30 rpm). Multiple repetitions were performed for each combination of parameters to ensure robustness in the statistical analysis. The resulting samples were analyzed to determine the mass flow rate delivered by the pellet extruder, calculating the mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation for each set of process parameters. The experimental data were used to construct operating curves of the system, illustrating the mass flow rate behavior as a function of layer height. These maps serve as a useful tool for calibrating and optimizing process parameters in 3D printing applications using thermoplastic materials, highlighting the optimal operating conditions for the extrusion process.

Abstract
These maps serve as a useful tool for calibrating and optimizing process parameters in 3D printing applications using thermoplastic materials, highlighting the optimal operating conditions for the extrusion process.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
