In recent years, the use of drones has significantly expanded in many sectors, driven by the rapid advancement of technologies. These aircraft find application in both military and civilian contexts, carrying out activities ranging from emergency management and search and rescue missions, to synchronized light shows, agricultural crop monitoring, industrial inspections and much more. A crucial aspect for the success of these applications is the ability of drones to operate in groups, synchronizing correctly and avoiding collisions. However, the coordinated control of multiple drones presents several technical challenges, especially when using low-end devices, such as the DJI Tello Edu, which suffer from limitations such as errors in the IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors and latencies in the communication between the computer and the drone. In this thesis, the behavior of two DJI Tello Edu drones is analyzed through three practical experiments, carried out using Python scripts: In the first experiment, commands are sent separately to each drone from two separate computers; In the second experiment, a single computer coordinates both drones, which simultaneously execute the same commands; In the third experiment, a leader-follower formation is implemented, where the follower drone uses exclusively the video stream of its camera to recognize a QR code placed on the leader and follow it autonomously. Through these three experiments, the level of synchronization between the drones is progressively improved, optimizing the coordination of movements and reducing the risk of collision. To ensure precise and real-time monitoring of the drones' movement during the experiments, the Vicon Motion Capture system was used. Thanks to this technology, it was possible to acquire data relating to the position, orientation, speed and distances between the drones. The information collected was subsequently processed to build graphs useful for analyzing trajectories and flight dynamics. The results obtained show how, even with low-cost drones and limited sensors, it is possible to develop reliable cooperative navigation systems through the integration of computer vision techniques and correct communication management.
