Abstract

The ongoing digital revolution, commonly referred to as Industry 4.0, is radically transforming the global technological and industrial landscape. The integration of advanced technologies—such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cyber-physical systems—has ushered in an era in which computers have become not only more powerful, but also more compact and energy-efficient, enabling innovative applications across numerous industrial sectors. In this context, robotics has taken on a central role, becoming a fundamental pillar in the automation of production processes. This thesis focuses on the tuning of six PID controllers for a seven degrees-of-freedom (7-DOF) robotic arm, employing advanced learning methodologies—specifically Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG)—developed within the framework of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). The objective is twofold: on one hand, to optimize the control of the robotic arm, and on the other, to enable the system to plan trajectories capable of avoiding obstacles, thus ensuring safe and efficient operation.

DEEP REINFORCEMENT LEARNING-BASED PID TUNING FOR TRAJECTORY TRACKING OF A 7-DOF ROBOTIC ARM
