Ground clutter in airborne radars can significantly limit performance in detecting and tracking surface objects. The high speed of the platforms and the strong heterogeneity of the clutter, whose Doppler depends on the direction of arrival, make detecting low-speed and low-RCS targets particularly challenging. In modern AESA radars, it is possible to simultaneously process signals from different subarrays of the antenna or from individual elements, acquired over multiple pulses: the radar datacube. This approach enables highly selective cancellation of clutter and potential intentional jamming, allowing for the detection of targets that would otherwise be completely obscured. The combination of efficient STAP processing algorithms and high-performance hardware platforms now makes it possible to apply these techniques in real-time on airborne platforms. The thesis focuses on analyzing the main clutter cancellation algorithms and their implementation on the new AMD Versal devices with AI Engine.

Abstract

STUDY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF SPACE-TIME ADAPTIVE PROCESSING (STAP) ALGORITHMS ON AMD VERSAL ARCHITECTURES FOR CLUTTER SUPPRESSION IN AVIONIC RADARS
