The present Bachelor Thesis falls within the Academic Field (Settore Scientifico Disciplinare in Italian) MAT/07 (Mathematical Physics). The objective we aim for is to study some mechanical and structural aspects of the phenomenon of adhesion. In particular, the focus is on materials, deformable and/or rigid, that adhere through a layer of adhesive, assumed to be very thin and representable by a system of elastic forces. Through a variational approach, the equilibrium equations describing the deformations of the two adherent materials and the mutual forces exchanged by them through the adhesive layer are deduced. In doing so, reference is made to a class of one-dimensional mathematical models of Continuum Mechanics, specializing the study to a shear lag model. In this context, after the analytical solution of the equilibrium equations is provided, it is possible to: 1. deduce the exact expression of the adhesion force exchanged through the adhesive as a function of the constitutive parameters characterizing the adherent materials and the adhesive itself (as a limiting case, the situation where one of the adherents is rigid is considered); 2. determine a characteristic internal length, called the persistence length, which identifies the length scale within which the perturbations induced by external loads (displacements or stresses) decrease with increasing distance from the points where such loads are applied. Finally, a dedicated bibliographic study has been conducted, inserting the results of the work carried out in this Thesis into the broad panorama of the scientific literature concerning continuous systems experiencing adhesion.
