Over the last decades, the evolution of transparent building envelopes has reshaped the relationship between buildings and their external environment, moving towards more adaptive and efficient forms of interaction. Within this framework, the present work investigates the performance of innovative glazing systems with variable optical transmittance, applied to high-efficiency buildings, with the objective of evaluating their energy and visual behavior under different climatic scenarios. The research activity began with the selection and systematization of eighty commercially available technological solutions, each characterized by specific performance values in their two activation states (clear and tinted). The electrochromic glazing identified were subsequently integrated into the Medium Office model, a reference building for the tertiary sector developed by the United States Department of Energy and widely adopted internationally for energy simulations. The integration was carried out within an interactive computational environment based on Grasshopper, which, through embedded links with Python and EnergyPlus, enables parametric management and full automation of the simulation process. The analyses, performed in dynamic hourly simulations on an annual basis, focused exclusively on the south façade of the building, virtually located in three Italian cities: Brindisi, Rome, and Milan. The parameters considered for each glazing were the solar factor (g-value) and the visible light transmittance (Tvis), as they are essential in evaluating the thermo-optical performance of the envelope. This work contributes to the broader research field dedicated to defining design criteria and analytical methodologies for integrated design, helping to clarify the potential and limitations of electrochromic glazing systems in diversified climatic scenarios.

Abstract
This work contributes to the broader research field dedicated to defining design criteria and analytical methodologies for integrated design, helping to clarify the potential and limitations of electrochromic glazing systems in diversified climatic scenarios.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
