This thesis analyses the case of the de Havilland D.H. 106 Comet I, the first jet airliner to enter commercial service, as a key event in the design development of aircraft fuselages. The focus is placed on the 1954 accidents involving the G-ALYP and G-ALYY aircraft, which were caused by fatigue failure of the pressurised fuselage. Through the analysis of official sources and technical-scientific literature, the study examines the role of fatigue in metallic materials, fracture mechanics, and stress concentrations around structural openings. The thesis also includes a finite element model aimed at evaluating the stress state and identifying the most structurally critical regions. Finally, the technical legacy of the Comet case is highlighted, as it marked a turning point in the evolution of structural safety criteria: from the safe-life concept, aircraft design progressively moved towards fail-safe and damage-tolerance approaches, which today form the basis of the design of aeronautical structures.
