The work presents a machine learning and neural network system for photovoltaic module status classification from RGB images, implemented in MATLAB. The system processes images through a set of spatial filters, localizes cells using Normalized Cross-Correlation, and extracts six numerical texture and chromaticity descriptors. A Gaussian kernel SVM classifier classifies each image into one of the six categories of the dataset, consisting of 871 images, achieving an accuracy of 67.67%. The system is compared to a convolutional neural network trained on the five main classes, which achieves 77.44% accuracy. The comparison between the two approaches in terms of classification metrics and computational cost constitutes the original experimental contribution of the work.
