The urgent need to reduce the environmental impact of the construction sector has led to the growing attention towards the development and use of sustainable materials. This thesis focuses on the use of eco-friendly mortars based on marine sediments and mussel shell meal. The study is divided into two parts: the first consists in an introduction to the concept of sustainable materials through examples conducted by other researchers; the second describes the experimental activity, aimed at evaluating the mechanical properties of a new cement mortar based on marine sediments and mussel meal. The experimental tests conducted include flexural and compressive strength tests. The results obtained show that the sustainable mortar specimens do not yet offer the required performances compared to the traditional one, presenting low values of flexural and compressive strength and this will require future research and experiments.
