The aim of my thesis is to evaluate how a double-skin façade can improve the energy performance of a building. The case study examined is a mixed-use building located on the suburbs of the city of Foggia (Fg). The study starts from the energy analysis of the building originally designed through the thermodynamic analysis made with the software DesignBuilder. This study help find the issues, such as the summer overheating and the absence of local energy production. From these analyses, some solutions have been suggested to improve it. It was chosen a double-skin façade of the type with uprights and crosspieces with a very large cavity. The main improvement strategies are based on the natural and interactive ventilation of the facade solution and the use of mobile screens positioned in the second skin. For the photovoltaic production several hypotheses have been evaluated, but the most efficient one has been the use of photovoltaic laminated glass in the facade. Thanks to the improvements made, the energy consumption of the building and consequently its emissions during its useful life decreased by 50%. Ultimately, the use of double skin solutions is very versatile given the possibility of using it on existing buildings. This solution, if properly designed, greatly improves the energy efficiency of the building and also gives a better aesthetic.
