Abstract

A key element towards of researchers are aiming is the exploitation of all the capacity that a renewable power plant offers: for a wind farm, controlling the turbines mean optimizing and maximizing the power production. Nowadays, yaw misalignment is one of the most used control strategies: modelling correctly the flow behind a wind turbine allows the prediction of the power produced and, hence, a more efficient control. In this context this thesis is positioned: including the streamwise dependence in the Curled Wake Model, allows to study how this novel feature influences the results and if they are closer to results obtained by high-fidelity tools or experimental data. By implementing this novel approach, the streamwise position of the wake is considered, therefore the spanwise velocity field, responsible for the vortices’ displacement, is affected by the new feature. In terms of spanwise velocity field, this novel approach predicts a velocity field lower than the original model, resulting in less deflection of the wake and, thus, less effectiveness of the yaw angle applied. Furthermore, the spanwise velocity field is closer to the one predicted by SOWFA simulation and the vortices’ displacements are similar to that predicted by using different tools and theories. The added feature has significant impact on a downstream turbine: analysis for a linear array of three turbine has been carried out, by using different yaw angles, and the power output of a downstream turbine is lower than the one predicted by the original Curled Wake Model.
