Regulation (EU) 2017/745 represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the clinical engineer. The 123 articles of the MDR actually place a lot of attention on clinical effectiveness. Today it is necessary to demonstrate that the device is not only safe, but also effective and to do this we use clinical evaluation for which the clinical engineers are responsible, who become a fundamental figure in matters of supervision. However, the vast majority of medical devices to date are still not certified and the time required for certification through designated notified bodies is slow. An alarm bell welcomed and immediately raised by clinical engineers and other professionals in the sector is represented by the concern that the application of Regulation (EU) 2017/745, on the dates in which it comes into force, instead of creating balance, safety and regulation, may generate shortages of products in European healthcare services, with the consequent lack of responses to patients' needs. The new obligations required by the regulation, therefore, certainly lead to a more severe selection among the medical devices that it is really necessary to put on the market, favoring those that are able to pass all the control phases and that satisfy the multiple safety and security requirements. effectiveness required by European law. Abstract

On the other hand, the bureaucratic burden inevitably weighs on manufacturing companies in terms of costs and could lead some small companies, especially those involved in distribution, to exit the market.

TRANSITION TO REGULATION (EU) 2017/745 ON MEDICAL DEVICES: GUIDE FOR THE CLINICAL ENGINEER AND THE BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER
