In the last few years, space exploration has been growing at an increasing pace but it has caused clear problems to the environment. In particular during the launches of rockets, when a large amount of fuel is burned, all of the exhaust gases are released in the air causing very important pollution problems. In addition, the total price of space launches must also be taken into account. Indeed one of the factors that limits the space exploration is the total price of launches too expensive due to the large total fuel consumption and the higher cost that the production of a specific rocket requires. In this case study we select a Falcon Heavy reusable launch vehicle, which is one of the most innovative and efficient rockets in the world for the low-cost lifting of heavy payloads into Earth’s low-orbit and beyond. We have considered the first launch of Falcon Heavy happened on February 6 of 2018, when the rocket carried a red Tesla Roadster toward Mars. We have evaluated different strategies for optimization of fuel consumption and to minimize the environmental impact. In particular, the aim of this case study is to find several strategies that would allow the reduction of fuel consumption during the Falcon Heavy’s flight and to estimate how much fuel could be saved in each flight. In this way, the price of launches would decrease and, using less fuel, the environmental impact would also be reduced.

Abstract

STUDY OF FUEL CONSERVATION FOR THE LAUNCH OF FALCON HEAVY
