In recent years, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability have become crucial priorities in the construction sector, promoting the development of innovative technologies such as smart windows. These advanced solutions, which include thermochromic and electrochromic glass, allow for dynamic regulation of light and heat transmission to optimize the energy efficiency of buildings and improve occupant comfort. This thesis aims to compare the energy performance of thermochromic and electrochromic glass applied to a case study: a school building located in Bari, a Mediterranean climate context ideal for assessing the effectiveness of smart windows. After a review of the state-of-the-art technologies, the thesis analyzes the building’s energy performance in relation to lighting, heating, and cooling, comparing the energy consumption of the different types of glass. The results show that electrochromic glass offers the greatest advantages in terms of energy efficiency compared to thermochromic and traditional glass, thanks to its greater flexibility and customization. In particular, a significant reduction in energy consumption related to heating and cooling is observed. Finally, the thesis also explores the detailed design of the building’s envelope. This work represents an important contribution to understanding the potential of smart windows in Mediterranean school environments, paving the way for future large-scale applications of these technologies.
