The GSM-R system has long served as the benchmark for railway operational communications, ensuring interoperability and safety within the ERTMS framework. However, the progressive digitalization of the railway sector and the increasing emphasis on continuous infrastructure monitoring have revealed the limitations of a technology based on second-generation standards. In this context, the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) has emerged as a next-generation railway mobile communication system, built upon 5G architectures and intended to progressively replace GSM-R. This thesis investigates the evolution of railway telecommunications and the key features of FRMCS, highlighting its contributions to operational safety, process digitalization, and the provision of advanced monitoring and predictive maintenance services. Furthermore, the study explores strategies for migrating from GSM-R to FRMCS and examines selected European trials, aiming to define the role of FRMCS as an enabling platform for technological innovation and the sustainable development of the railway system.

Abstract
Furthermore, the study explores strategies for migrating from GSM-R to FRMCS and examines selected European trials, aiming to define the role of FRMCS as an enabling platform for technological innovation and the sustainable development of the railway system.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
