This work presents an in-depth analysis of Project Management (PM), defining its foundations, historical evolution, typical structure, and international reference standards. Starting from the PM definition, the study examines the main phases of the project life cycle, key processes, and knowledge areas that guide the management of critical project factors. It then traces the technological transition introducing artificial intelligence into PM, highlighting motivations, obstacles, and potential benefits in decision-making processes. AI and AI agents are defined, distinguishing systems based on machine learning, intelligent automation, and autonomous agents capable of reasoning and decision-making, with references to conceptual standards and sector literature. Through a review of recent literature, innovative applications of AI and AI agents in PM are identified, including predictive analytics, time and cost estimation, risk management, performance monitoring, decision support, and automation of routine activities. The impact on PM standards is critically evaluated, with particular attention to the updating of professional knowledge and the emergence of new competencies required for project managers. The investigation also considers ethical implications, governance, and transparency in the use of AI models for strategic project decisions. A transformation in project work organization is identified in the presence of AI and AI agents, including new human-machine collaborative practices and novel resource coordination modalities. Finally, examining various case studies of innovative technology applications in PM, advantages, challenges, and future scenarios on the topic are discussed.
