This experimental thesis investigates the multi-layer Directed Energy Deposition (DED) process of AISI 316, evaluating an integrated monitoring framework developed by the Polytechnic University of Bari to mitigate thermal instability and deformation of the overhanging substrate. The system combines CLAMIR (laser power PID control via a MWIR camera) and a laser profilometer (LL) for adaptive correction of the stand-off distance. Across eight tests of increasing complexity, the CLAMIR+LL configuration provides the highest dimensional uniformity, whereas LL alone maximizes the growth rate. The results provide quantitative criteria for selecting the control strategy according to the primary process requirement.

Abstract
The results provide quantitative criteria for selecting the control strategy according to the primary process requirement.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
