Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly recognized as a transformative force in the healthcare industry, with a growing number of startups developing innovative solutions in clinical and organizational areas. This study aims to: a) empirically analyze the characteristics of healthcare AI startups in the US and European markets; b) classify these startups into functional domains; c) identify which domains attract the highest levels of funding. The data was extracted from the Crunchbase platform, obtaining a sample of 1,607 US startups and 2,499 European startups. Startups were classified into six functional domains (Diagnostics, Treatment, Monitoring & Follow-Up, Drug Discovery, HealthTech Infrastructure, Administrative Process) using a hybrid approach based on semantic embeddings and keyword scoring. Descriptive statistics analyzed the distribution of funding, revenue, development stages, and geographic location of startups. Funding differences between domains were examined using inferential analysis. The study shows a highly skewed distribution of funding received, with most startups concentrated in the early stages of the life cycle and in the lowest revenue ranges. Inferential analysis highlighted statistically significant differences between functional domains, with divergent investor attractiveness hierarchies between the United States and Europe. The results suggest the existence of different investment priorities in the two ecosystems: in the United States, domains related to administrative process management and drug discovery show higher levels of funding, while in Europe, clinical diagnostics emerge. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the competitive dynamics in the AI-startup ecosystem in the healthcare sector, providing empirical evidence on the structural differences between the US and European markets.

Abstract

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN HEALTHCARE: EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF AI-STARTUPS IN THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE
