Static stall is an aerodynamic phenomenon governed by the progressive separation of the boundary layer, which determines the onset of highly nonlinear aerodynamic loads. This thesis focuses on the characterization of static stall on the symmetric NACA 0012 aerofoil, investigated at a Mach number of 0.3 and a Reynolds number of 3.8*10^6. In order to analyze the complex stall phenomenology, this work adopts a hybrid methodological approach based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the implementation of the Leishman-Beddoes semi-empirical model. The main objective is to demonstrate how the latter, although based on simplified nonlinear equations, can faithfully replicate the behavior of the fluid dynamic solver. To this end, data extracted from a campaign of numerical simulations at different angles of attack were used to solve bounded optimization problems using a genetic algorithm. The direct comparison between the CFD investigation and the analytical prediction showed an excellent correspondence. The model proved capable of approximating with extreme precision the curve of the static trailing edge separation point and the consequent lift loss. In conclusion, the Leishman-Beddoes model was fully validated for the considered case, confirming itself as a competitive and trustworthy prediction tool.

Abstract
In conclusion, the Leishman-Beddoes model was fully validated for the considered case, confirming itself as a competitive and trustworthy prediction tool.I documenti in UNITESI sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
