This thesis project aims to computationally characterize the behavior of a fixed-geometry microfluidic device designed to simulate different tissue-specific biological barriers solely by varying the operating conditions. The workflow consisted of CAD modeling and the generation of an optimized 2D computational grid using Pointwise. The mesh was strategically refined near the lateral openings to accurately capture convective-diffusive gradients, and coarsened within the culture chamber. Subsequently, the setup for laminar simulations was developed in Ansys Fluent, utilizing the Species Transport model. The lateral openings are modeled as impermeable walls, and the species extraction is represented by a volumetric source term applied to the adjacent cells. The study analyzes three operating scenarios, differentiated by inlet velocity, kinetic coefficient of the source term, and the specific openings activated during the numerical setup phase. The fluid dynamics and mass transport analysis aims to map the concentration profile within the domain. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate that the model can be calibrated to reproduce the three target extraction percentages (90%, 50%, and 10%) using the same geometry, within the limits declared in the thesis.

Abstract
The ultimate goal is to demonstrate that the model can be calibrated to reproduce the three target extraction percentages (90%, 50%, and 10%) using the same geometry, within the limits declared in the thesis.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
