The analysis of a structural problem certainly requires a careful understanding of the possible phenomena that can influence the response in the presence of a studied circumstance, but it requires just as much care in the ways in which these phenomena are represented. Knowledge of the implications related to the choices made in modeling is crucial for correctly interpreting the results obtained downstream of an analysis. In this study, multiple phenomenological implications related to the representation of non-linear behavior in structures are analyzed in depth, in order to obtain greater confidence with the modeling phase, an extremely delicate and decisive phase in the cognitive process of the real mechanical characteristics of the analyzed structure. In particular, it’s studied the behavior of pressure-bending bridge piers, modeled by adopting a distributed plasticity approach, both in static and dynamic conditions, analyzing in detail the elements underlying the generation of a result by a calculation code. The achievement of this goal is supported by the OpenSees framework, through which the writing of specific calculation codes allows to significantly increase the level of in-depth knowledge in structural analysis, also focusing on problems related to the numerical analysis that lies behind the generation of an output. The attention is focused on the phenomena of degradation of the expected performances of the structure, in terms of resistance and stiffness, due to the cyclic actions, through models in which the ability of some formulations on the materials is tested to adequately capture the real structural behavior. The results obtained are therefore validated through comparisons with experimental data on real models. Finally, it’s studied a complex structural problem, the Rio Torto viaduct, entirely modeled on the OpenSees environment through a distributed plasticity approach, finalizing the studies conducted on the models in the phases preceding the obtaining and management of an output, representing the expected structural response, in the non-linear field. Particular attention is paid, in this context, to the correct interpretation of the results obtained, in order to guide towards targeted and suitable modeling and analysis strategies.
