Abstract

Through a study of the most significant women's and feminist magazines of a period ranging from the 60s to the contemporary age, we intend to reveal the existing gender discrimination not only at the level of content but at the basis of the editorial realization of the magazines. The graphic, typographical and semiotic aspects differ between women's magazines and others, i.e. men's, feminist, mainstream and erotic magazines. Women's magazines in the past were used for educational purposes; the articles talked about how to make your husband happy, how to fold the sheets in the best way, how to educate your children, and everything related to domestic life. With the '68 there is an awakening of consciences, the role of women in society changes and consequently change the magazines, the first feminist newspapers are born self-published by the same activists, with topics until then never dedicated to the gender, in this era of transition coexist the classic glossy magazines of beauty with revolutionary newspapers. The world of women's publishing, especially magazines, has always made use of gender stereotypes; just think of the choice of typeface, bold, curvilinear, calligraphic, characteristics of the collective imagination aimed at women and consequently associated with the shape of the characters, the choice of colors, the poses assumed by the models on the cover. It is clear that in recent years there has been an awakening of consciousness given by generations that, thanks to the network, are not necessarily exposed to pre-made models but rather to the varied references of sexuality, family and individual. It is now clear that as time goes by, fewer and fewer adolescents will recognize themselves in the idealized figure of male or female, as it has always existed, at least until the early 2000s. Hence the need for a new type of magazine capable of reflecting, both in content and graphics, the ideology of the new generations.
