Abstract

The research project has as its objective the construction of a large Atlas of the native Apulian furniture, starting from the analysis of the typological matrices, up to their comparison and classification by common elements which aims to use the peculiarities of the furniture as a tool with which to obtain processes of regeneration and innovation of contemporary languages. It is a history of Apulian furniture that has never yet been explored in its formal variables, but is important as a legacy handed down over time by artisan knowledge. A first phase consists in the collection of information, such as riliefs, photos, drawings, stories of the objects that have been examined over the last few years by the students of the Industrial Design degree course on the occasion of the Furniture Laboratory II. Thus we discover ancient types of furniture for daily use and whose origins we ignored, but also furniture with functions that are no longer in use, or flexible in terms of use. Afterwards, the material is divided into three macro-categories: seats (storage benches and chairs), support surfaces (tables, desks and consoles) and containers (chest of drawers, cupboard, crystal cabinets, bedside tables, wardrobes). Thus we move on to organize the available data in a scientific way, through criteria of comparison, which allow us to obtain the formal, constructive and symbolic variants of each category of furniture. To date, unconsciously and not, in current design methods, we use the same techniques of the past. A demonstration of how present and past are intertwined, linked through bonds of contamination and functional hybridizations. Having taken into consideration the study addressed in the first phase, the theme of the creation of three types of furniture was analysed: Systems of wooden chests, work surfaces/containers and chairs in wood, taking up traditional elements and forms of native furniture.
