The aim of this thesis was to find design solutions for the problem of homeless, a phenomenon widespread not only in Italy but also in Europe. In fact, homeless people, individuals without a home for economic, social or cultural reasons, face daily different problems, first of all survival in the street in any weather or health condition, alone or accompanied by a partner, children or, for the most interesting topic of research, by objects. This is a worrying situation in various aspects: psychological and physical for the individual, but also for the surrounding community, which finds itself involved in the phenomenon. The first phase consisted in a thorough research on the subject. Information was collected on the general condition of the homeless: their habits, the reasons for the status that distinguishes them, the consequences on themselves and on the rest of the population. In addition, the ideas of other designers who had previously advanced on the European scene were also compared, in order to draw from them an incentive for the development of a personal project. The survey was also based on data collected officially in Italy and Europe, elaborating reflections and highlighting further considerations, solutions adopted at the legislative level, reactions of the territory. It is precisely in this area that we have collaborated with humanitarian associations around Bari. By participating in initiatives and interviewing volunteers, we have reached successive immediate observations, the result of evaluations from direct experience. Finally, from the sum of the information collected and the reflections gained, a design idea has been obtained that can help both the individual and the community in which he lives.

Abstract

DESIGN FOR URBAN SURVIVAL
