Abstract

The focus of the thesis concerns the design of a padded product system with reference to the language and production of padded products of the Apulian company Natuzzi. In particular, within what are the Design-driven theories, the innovation brought about falls within that known as innovation of meaning that shifts the lever with respect to those assumptions that are placed in the cultural and symbolic dimension. This dimension is enriched by the instances of sustainability, assumed as a further need for implementation in the project guidelines. A framework is built in which environmental sustainability, linked to what it means to disassemble or dispose of the finished product, also brings with it the possibility of building a narrative of the product with respect to the specifications of the language. The knowledge of the product systems occurred through having investigated the Natuzzi case study through an archive research that led to the creation of a taxonomy suitable for the analysis of the systems: structural, sealing and assembly. Furthermore, the data collected were interpreted and inserted into a prototype of an interactive tool useful for reconstructing a product archive that highlights the value of the decades-long production of the Murgese company. This investigation contributed to the product design phase. We started from a concept that addresses the issue of the transformability of the upholstered system, in this case adaptable to an independent structural system. The product ethically embraces the issues of cultural sustainability and innovation of meaning as it is born as the result of an artisanal process that draws on the production history of the Murgese company. The product was defined through a direct comparison with the company that provided the project with the data necessary for the formal and structural study.

INNOVATION OF MEANING AND PRODUCT IN THE UPHOLSTERED PRODUCT SYSTEM: THE NATUZZI CASE
